For many parents, sending a child to preschool is both exciting and nerve-racking. They trust teachers to provide a safe, caring environment while they’re away. But for one mother in China, a single photo shared in a parent group was enough to completely shatter that trust.
The mother, identified by the pseudonym Xiaowen, had her first child in her mid-30s. Because her daughter, Kiki, was her only child, she and her husband were especially protective and often checked the school’s parent messaging group for updates.
Like many preschools, the teachers regularly shared photos of children eating, playing, and taking afternoon naps.
One day, a teacher uploaded a photo of Kiki during naptime—but deleted it less than 30 seconds later.
Unfortunately for the teacher, Xiaowen had already seen it.
At first glance, the photo looked ordinary.
But after looking more closely, Xiaowen realized that Kiki wasn’t asleep. Instead, the little girl was lying awake, chewing on the corner of her blanket.
What upset the mother even more was that the teacher, sitting nearby, appeared to be looking down at a cellphone instead of paying attention to the children.
Feeling angry, Xiaowen immediately contacted the teacher.
“I already saw the picture,” she wrote. “You’re supposed to be looking after the children, but instead you’re using your phone while my daughter is still awake.”
The teacher responded by explaining that preschool teachers cannot force every child to fall asleep.
According to her, part of preschool education is helping children gradually develop the habit of napping independently.
She also said that teachers often use the lunch break to reply to parents’ messages and complete work-related tasks on their phones. Since the children were resting and the classroom remained supervised, she believed briefly checking her phone was reasonable.
The explanation did little to reassure Xiaowen.
She felt the teacher had not given the children enough attention and believed the school’s level of care did not meet her expectations.
Not long afterward, she transferred Kiki to another preschool.
The story quickly spread online, where opinions were sharply divided.
Some people sided with the mother, arguing that teachers should remain fully attentive whenever young children are in their care, even during naptime.
Others felt the criticism was unfair, pointing out that preschool teachers often supervise dozens of children at once. They argued that not every child falls asleep immediately and that teachers cannot personally comfort every child while also responding to parents and handling classroom responsibilities.
Many also noted that simply using a phone does not necessarily mean a teacher is neglecting the children, especially if the phone is being used for work.
Whether the mother overreacted or the teacher should have been more attentive remains a matter of opinion.
What most people agreed on, however, was that trust between parents and teachers is essential. When concerns arise, honest communication can often resolve misunderstandings before they grow into bigger conflicts.
After all, both parents and educators share the same goal: helping children feel safe, supported, and happy as they learn and grow.
