Gout is rapidly affecting younger people due to unhealthy eating habits that prioritize taste over health — even children are no longer immune.
Many people still believe gout is a disease that only affects older adults or heavy drinkers. However, the number of gout patients has increased sharply in recent years, and the age of onset is becoming alarmingly younger. In China, a 10-year-old fifth-grade girl was recently hospitalized with acute gout.
According to Dr. Ma Qijie, the causes behind such an early case are closely linked to genetics, lack of exercise, and especially unhealthy eating habits.
Through this case, the doctor also pointed out five groups of foods that are extremely popular but may significantly raise uric acid levels in the blood and trigger gout attacks. What worries experts most is that many families allow children to consume these foods excessively every day.

Gout occurs when uric acid levels remain elevated for a long time, causing uric acid crystals to accumulate in joints and trigger inflammation, swelling, and severe pain.
In the girl’s case, doctors found that she frequently consumed fatty meats and sugary beverages every day.
From a traditional medicine perspective, hot and humid weather may weaken the digestive system and contribute to metabolic imbalance. Modern medicine, however, explains that the core issue is prolonged high uric acid levels. When uric acid exceeds the safe threshold of 6.8 mg/dL, sharp crystals can begin forming in the joints.
Doctors warned that unhealthy eating habits may gradually overload both the digestive system and kidney function, making it harder for the body to eliminate excess uric acid.
Experts say this problem is becoming increasingly common among young people and children, especially alongside rising obesity rates.

Fatty pork, beef, lamb, and other red meats contain moderate to high levels of purines. Frequent overconsumption may significantly increase gout risk.
Soft drinks and industrial fruit juices often contain large amounts of fructose syrup, which may strongly stimulate uric acid production.
Shrimp, lobster, oysters, scallops, mussels, salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in purines and should be eaten in moderation despite their nutritional value.
Liver, kidneys, brain, heart, and pancreas contain extremely high levels of cholesterol and purines, which may worsen metabolic disorders.

Many people consider bone broth nutritious, but concentrated meat extracts may contain large amounts of dissolved purines that increase pressure on kidney function.
Doctors also emphasized that alcohol remains one of the leading contributors to gout because it both increases purine intake and reduces the kidneys’ ability to eliminate uric acid effectively.
