Most people get dressed every morning without ever stopping to wonder why men’s and women’s shirts button on opposite sides. It’s such a small detail that millions never notice it at all — yet this strange fashion difference has existed for hundreds of years.

According to fashion historians, the reason dates back to a time when clothing reflected:
