60-Year-Old Man Developed Severe Meningitis — Doctors Shocked By What Was Found Inside His Refrigerator

Refrigerators are often seen as the perfect solution for keeping food safe for long periods of time. But doctors are warning that storing food incorrectly — especially expired frozen food — may lead to serious health consequences.

A 60-year-old man in Guangdong, China, nearly lost his life after developing severe bacterial meningitis linked to contaminated food stored inside his refrigerator.

Suddenly Collapsed With High Fever And Confusion

According to Chinese media reports, the man suddenly became extremely weak and collapsed with a high fever reaching 40°C (104°F).

He later developed:

  • trembling,
  • stiff limbs,
  • confusion,
  • diarrhea,
  • and loss of bladder control.

Doctors eventually diagnosed him with:

purulent meningitis — a severe bacterial infection affecting the membranes surrounding the brain.

Doctors Investigated His Refrigerator — And Were Horrified

While investigating the possible source of infection, doctors discovered the man had a habit of:

  • keeping frozen meat and seafood for months or even years,
  • eating expired dairy products and drinks,
  • and refusing to throw away spoiled food to save money.

Reports say his refrigerator regularly contained:

  • moldy food,
  • expired ingredients,
  • and visible mold growing inside the fridge itself.

Doctors believe harmful bacteria entered his body through contaminated food, eventually spreading into the bloodstream and attacking the brain.

Fortunately, he received emergency treatment in time and gradually recovered. Doctors say the infection could easily have become fatal.

Experts Warn: Frozen Food Does NOT Last Forever

Dr. Yan Zonghai, director of a toxicology center in Taiwan, explained that many people mistakenly believe freezing food means it can be stored indefinitely.

However, different foods have very different safe storage periods — even in freezers.

For example:

  • opened sausages may last about 1 week in the refrigerator,
  • unopened sausages may last around 2 weeks,
  • frozen sausages may keep for 1–2 months.

Seafood also has limits:

  • oily fish like salmon may last only 2–3 months frozen,
  • lean fish may last 6–8 months,
  • shrimp and crab may last longer but still require proper storage.

Old Frozen Food Can Still Become Dangerous

Experts explain that freezing only slows bacterial growth — it does not completely eliminate bacteria forever.

Once expired food is thawed:

  • bacteria may multiply rapidly,
  • contamination risk increases,
  • and food poisoning may occur.

Doctors say symptoms may begin as:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • stomach pain,
  • diarrhea,
  • and fever.

But in elderly individuals or people with weaker immune systems, infections may become much more severe and spread throughout the body.

Doctors Recommend Labeling Frozen Food

Experts suggest people should:

  • write purchase dates on frozen foods,
  • follow “first in, first out” storage habits,
  • and regularly clean refrigerators.

Doctors also recommend throwing away:

  • expired food,
  • moldy ingredients,
  • and anything with strange smells or discoloration.

Final Thought

Medical experts warn that refrigerators are not magical “safe zones” where food stays fresh forever.

And according to doctors, keeping old expired food inside the fridge for too long may sometimes create hidden dangers far more serious than many people realize.
