Nightmare On The Highway: 3 Tons Of Eels Spill Across Road, Covering Cars In Thick Slime

Drivers in Oregon were left horrified after a truck carrying more than three tons of live eels overturned on a highway, creating one of the strangest and most disgusting road accidents many people had ever seen.

According to reports, the incident happened on Highway 101 in the U.S. state of Oregon when a truck transporting approximately 3,400 kilograms of eels suddenly braked near a construction detour. The sudden stop caused one of the large containers holding the eels to fall from the back of the truck.

Moments later, an oncoming vehicle crashed directly into the container, triggering a chain reaction that caused the remaining tanks to spill across the road.

What happened next shocked everyone at the scene.

As the eels scattered across the highway, they began releasing enormous amounts of thick slime — a natural defense mechanism used when they feel threatened or stressed. Within minutes, the road became covered in a sticky layer of mucus so slippery and dense that several vehicles became coated in the substance.

Photos released by local police quickly went viral online because the scene looked almost unreal. Cars were seen covered in slime and tangled with eels, while the roadway appeared completely slick and chaotic.

Authorities reported that the accident caused a four-car collision, although fortunately only minor injuries were recorded.

Experts later explained that these eels, commonly known as hagfish, are famous for producing large amounts of slime as protection against predators. When threatened, a single hagfish can release enough mucus to rapidly expand into a thick gelatin-like substance mixed with seawater.

Cleanup crews reportedly faced major difficulties because the slime became extremely slippery and sticky once spread across the pavement and vehicle tires.

The bizarre accident quickly attracted worldwide attention online, with many people describing it as:
