A remarkable 100-year-old doctor in Japan is inspiring many with her dedication to medicine and her extraordinary health.

According to The Straits Times, Dr. Teru Kasamatsu, who lives in Wakayama Prefecture, continues to actively practice medicine and can still walk independently without the help of a cane.

Dr. Kasamatsu currently works at Kasamatsu Hospital in Kainan City, where she treats outpatients three days a week. Most of her patients suffer from common illnesses, and she has been wearing her white coat and caring for others for nearly 80 years.

Her second son, Dr. Satoshi Kasamatsu, 68, now serves as the hospital director, while his wife, Hitomi, 61, works as the head nurse.

“She has a special ability to create a warm atmosphere. Patients truly trust her,” Dr. Satoshi shared.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Health, as of the end of 2022, there were about 340,000 registered doctors in the country, with only 86 aged 98 or older — making Dr. Kasamatsu part of a very rare group.

Her Secrets to a Long and Healthy Life

Dr. Kasamatsu credits her longevity to simple but consistent habits, especially her diet.

She regularly eats vegetables such as:

  • Spinach

  • Broccoli

  • Cabbage

  • Okra

“These foods help regulate blood sugar and are very beneficial for overall health,” she explained.

Keeping the Brain Active

In addition to a healthy diet, she spends 1–2 hours every day solving number puzzles to keep her mind sharp and prevent dementia.

“I make sure my brain keeps working,” she said.

She also stays updated on medical knowledge by reading materials from professional medical associations whenever she has time.

No Plans to Retire

Despite her age, Dr. Kasamatsu has no intention of retiring anytime soon.

Her story is a powerful reminder that staying active — both physically and mentally — may be one of the greatest keys to longevity.
