Why People Stick Cloves Into an Onion: The Traditional Kitchen Trick That Still Works Today
Discover the secret reason behind this old-school home hack. Have you ever walked into someone’s kitchen and spotted a peeled…
Many people never think twice about the position they sleep in, yet it can have a surprising impact on comfort, breathing, digestion, and even certain medical conditions. Social media often claims that sleeping on the right side is dangerous and that everyone should switch to the left side immediately. The truth is more balanced. While sleeping on the left side may offer advantages for some people—especially those with acid reflux—sleeping on the right side is not automatically harmful. The best sleeping position depends on your individual health needs.
One of the most researched topics is the relationship between sleeping position and acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The stomach naturally sits slightly to the left side of the body. When a person lies on their left side, gravity may help keep stomach contents below the lower esophageal sphincter, reducing the likelihood that stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. Several studies have found that people with acid reflux often experience fewer nighttime symptoms when sleeping on their left side.
In contrast, lying on the right side may allow stomach contents to sit closer to the junction between the stomach and the esophagus in some individuals. For people who frequently experience heartburn or nighttime reflux, this position may increase discomfort. However, this does not mean that everyone who sleeps on their right side will develop digestive problems. Many healthy individuals sleep comfortably on their right side without experiencing any adverse effects.
People with chronic acid reflux may also benefit from avoiding large meals within two to three hours of bedtime, limiting alcohol before sleep, maintaining a healthy weight, and elevating the head of the bed if nighttime symptoms persist. These lifestyle changes often have a greater impact than sleeping position alone.
Sleeping position may also affect breathing. Some people with mild sleep apnea or heavy snoring find that sleeping on their side helps keep the airway more open compared with lying flat on their back. Side sleeping can reduce airway collapse during sleep, although individuals with moderate or severe sleep apnea should seek medical evaluation rather than relying solely on sleep position.
Pregnant women are often advised to sleep on their left side during the later stages of pregnancy. This position may improve blood flow to the uterus and reduce pressure on major blood vessels. Nevertheless, doctors generally reassure expectant mothers that changing positions naturally during sleep is normal and not usually a cause for concern.
There is no strong scientific evidence showing that sleeping on the right side alone causes heart disease, liver disease, or other serious medical conditions in healthy individuals. Comfort, quality sleep, and treating underlying health conditions remain far more important than choosing one specific side every night.
If you wake up with persistent heartburn, coughing, chest discomfort, frequent choking sensations during sleep, or excessive daytime fatigue, it is worth discussing these symptoms with a healthcare professional. They may indicate acid reflux, sleep apnea, or another condition that requires evaluation and treatment.
Improving sleep quality also involves maintaining consistent sleep schedules, limiting caffeine late in the day, reducing screen exposure before bedtime, keeping the bedroom cool and quiet, and choosing a supportive mattress and pillow that maintain proper spinal alignment.
Ultimately, there is no universally perfect sleeping position. The left side may offer digestive benefits for people with GERD, while the right side remains comfortable and safe for many others. Listening to your body, managing underlying medical conditions, and practicing good sleep hygiene are the most effective ways to achieve restful, restorative sleep.
