One of the most recognized nail changes associated with lung disease is digital clubbing. This condition causes the fingertips to become enlarged and the nails to curve downward more than usual. The normal angle between the nail and the cuticle becomes wider, giving the fingertips a rounded or bulb-like appearance.

Digital clubbing develops gradually and is thought to occur because of long-term changes in blood flow and tissue growth beneath the nails. It is also worth remembering that finger clubbing is uncommon in healthy individuals.
